A Dedication to Grief
An experiential six-month circle for tending sorrow, together
Grief asks something different of us than most of modern life. It asks us to slow down, listen, and make room for what cannot be fixed or hurried along. And perhaps most importantly, it asks us not to carry our sorrow alone.
Over six months, we will gather once a month for an extended four-hour circle devoted to developing a deeper relationship with grief. Inspired by Francis Weller’s work and his invitation to become an “apprentice to sorrow,” we will approach grief not as something to overcome, but as something we can learn to tend, express, and allow to move through us.
Our time together will weave shared inquiry with meditation, embodied and expressive practices, time in nature, ritual, silence, and relational witnessing.
Who
This circle is for anyone who feels called to deepen their relationship with grief. You may be grieving a person, a relationship, a transition, an unlived life, the state of the world, a disconnection from the natural world, or something that is difficult to name.
You do not need to be experiencing a recent loss. You simply need a willingness to turn toward grief with curiosity, care, and the support of others.
Where
We will gather in person in Norway, Maine, on 100 acres of woods, trails, and meadow. Most of our time will be held in the cabin, with opportunities to bring our practice outdoors and into relationship with the land throughout the nine months.
How
This is an experiential circle rather than a traditional grief support group. We will not only talk about grief, but explore how grief lives and moves through the body, our relationships, our creativity/life force, and our connection with the natural world.
Each gathering may include meditation, shared inquiry, expressive and embodied practices, breathwork, ritual, time outdoors, silence, and opportunities to witness and be witnessed by others. Optional sauna is also offered.
Sessions
We will gather once a month for four hours over six months, from November through April. Each gathering will have its own focus while leaving plenty of room for what is alive in the group and asking to be tended. Here are the tentative themes & focus:
November | Turning Toward Grief
Opening the circle, creating our container, and beginning to explore our personal relationship with grief.
December | What We Carry
Making space for the losses we know, as well as the quieter and less recognized griefs we may have learned to carry alone.
January | The Long Night
Exploring rest, darkness, stillness, and what grief asks of us when we stop trying to move it along.
February | Giving Grief a Body
Moving beyond words and allowing grief to find expression through the body, movement, sound, creativity, nature, and ritual.
March | Witnessing & Being Witnessed
Exploring what becomes possible when grief is held in community rather than carried privately, and preparing for our closing ritual.
April | Ritual, Release & Return
An extended nature-based grief ritual to honor what we have carried, give expression to what is ready to move, and mark our time together before returning to our lives.
